Chapter Awards $10,000 in Scholarship Grants to Ten JROTC Graduating Senior Cadets
For the past 17 years, the MOAA Central Florida Chapter has awarded competitive Cadet of the Year scholarships to outstanding graduating Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets. Each high school with a JROTC program in the central Florida area was invited to nominate up to two cadets. This year 17 of the 31 high schools in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties nominated a total of 29 cadets. The nominees were interviewed by a panel of chapter members representative of the United States armed services. Factors considered by the panel included, but were not limited to, military bearing and appearance in uniform, cadet assignments, advanced placement and honors classes attended, grade point average, school activities, and service in the community. All nominees were extremely qualified, and it was difficult for the interviewing panel to select the ten awardees.
In the last week of March 2017, LTC Michael Gillett, Chairman of the Cadet of the Year Selection committee, announced the winners of the scholarships. Awardees and their respective central Florida high schools are listed with the following photographs. Each cadet along with family members and the high school’s JROTC senior instructor were guests at a banquet luncheon on April 15, 2017 at the Orlando Elks Lodge, where the scholarships, including the monetary award, and personalized plaques were presented.
